For three weeks of each year, from June through to July, the sleepy fishing village of Port St Johns, on the aptly named Wild Coast of South Africa, transforms into the operations hub for one of ‘Nature’s Great Events’.
Millions of sardine, having spawned off Cape Agulhas earlier in the year, follow the ocean currents north up to the waters of KwaZulu-Natal. By the time they reach the Wild Coast, the word is out, and all the predators of the southern oceans are doing their best to join the feast. Cormorants drop from above; dolphins shepherd the bait balls into unbelievable groups; while from below the mouth of a whale opens to consume all. And that is without mentioning the sharks.
To dive this natural spectacle, we trail our dive centre up from Port Elizabeth to be able to operate to the best of our capability out of Port St John. Everything comes with: boats, compressors, tanks, spare gear (don’t forget the tool kit!) and even the centre cat if he is not quick enough. The oceans are testing up on the Wild Coast, with surf launches and heavy swell meaning the kit has to be first class and ready to take a pounding. We can hire elements of kit if required, but pre-booking is essential because it is a long drive back to town.
