The following morning a four hour drive north west took us into rural China and here the real work began as we all donned our trusty worn in walking boots and began the testing climb up Heaven’s Ladder. This steep narrow stepped part of the wall was a clever introduction into what lay ahead and shut all of us up as we concentrated on reserving our stamina and energy for the wall.

I remember the West African infantry men who died in far off East Africa during WWII; I remember the South Africans who died across the world in the second global conflagration; I remember the bereaved families of all those Africans scarred by modern conflict.

I am sat at our hotel looking towards the beach with swaying flowers, palms and wind swept water fountains in the foreground, lush lawns, a stream and turquoise swimming pool, lots more palms, and through the gaps the glistening blue sea with a few kites out on the water. In the distance are the mountains of Zaafarana as a backdrop; it’s a nice scene.

Curiously our success was down not to peak physical fitness, determination and strength, but Mars bars and show tunes and half remembered soul. In the end, it was Labi Siffre who got us through.

I think it has something to do with the feeling of entering a distinct world, one in which not all can survive. If I am being fanciful, it is a place of secrets, of young knowledge hard earned. It is also a place of beauty, where Seamus Heaney’s massive and diaphanous co-exist without conflict. Michele Menegon’s photos illustrate this quality far better than I can explain.

Friday. Six days and still my left knee protests. Well, I suppose it could have been worse, after all it has been a while since I have tramped 22 miles (26 if you count the subterranean scurry that is travelling by Tube).
